There are two approaches to powder coating spoked or laced rims on cars, motorcycles, and bikes.

One, leave them in place and powder coat over them.

Or two, remove and powder coat separately.

Making the best decision

If you’ve got dirt bike rims, spoke rims on bikes and motorcycles or cars that you’re looking to get powder coated, the question you need to ask is:

To take apart or… to not take apart?

Aside from the cost in additional labor using the second approach, powder coating them in place means that in the long term they cannot be taken apart. They will be entirely coated and non-removable.

That’s great for maintenance, however, if you’re wanting the full and complete restoration to spoked rims consider the longevity of the project at hand. You will need to how long are you keeping it or what level of restoration are you wanting to achieve with these spoked rims.

What does powder coating rims cost?

The cost to powder coat wheels can vary but using this powder coating pricing guide can help.

Wanting to update your car wheels in a way that doesn’t break the bank? Powder coat your rims.

Use this rim refinishing cost calculator to estimate how much your rims will cost to powder coat.

Powder coating is becoming a common application for customizing cars, trucks, and motorcycles because of the fast growth in custom coaters and consumers looking to stand out on the road.

Now more than ever auto enthusiasts are able to find these small job shops to get their everyday automotive and residential projects done locally. A simple search for powder coat rims near me will produce several local search results but may not reveal any pricing.

That’s why we’ve created this rim refinishing cost estimator. To help you get an idea on what the average cost of powder coat rims is so that you can decide whether to powder coat or buy new rims. Say for instance you wanted to powder coat your rims black, most custom coaters carry this color in-stock. Some may even have several black powders and finishes available.

This powder coat rims cost calculator includes all the work necessary to complete a set of rims by size and finish in either a single coat color application or a two-coat system like transparent, illusions and candy colors.

Know before you go

Before using this calculator you will need to know your rim measurements.

If you want to get ready like a pro download our free rim guide.

It takes you through all the steps you need to do before calling your nearby powder coater.

The basic services you should expect using this price estimator are stripping, sandblasting and possibly a metal prep wash. Washes can be offered for aluminum wheels or as a rust inhibitor for steel before the final coating process. Read more on the powder coat process.

How to use this calculator

The cost calculator does not include any additional services. Rim repairs, welding, dismounting, tire replacement,  taping and masking, two-tone(two color block), custom colors or special color, etc are usually all additional. Please check with your local coater about these additional services.

Again this is to be used for general purposes only on what is the average cost of powder coating rims and we make no claims on the type or quality of work expected from any powder coater you choose.

Many top-notch custom coaters can and will charge more for their services.

The reader should become somewhat knowledgeable about powder coating before seeking an applicator or jobber. You can find many more helpful articles on our blog.

Powder Coating Confidential: How to avoid problems with your powder coater

Troubleshooting is the most overlooked aspect of powder coating

Going over what your getting is important as much as what to go over when working with a powder coater. The most overlooked aspect of powder coating is knowing the level of restoration you’re going to get for that perfect powder coat finish.

When going to your local coater be sure to ask how they go about restoring your project.  Most quality custom coaters use a 5-stage restoration process to make sure your project gets done right. When you’re working on your prized or sentimental project it’s important to know that you’re getting it done right so be sure ask so you know what you’re getting into because restoration can be expensive and time-consuming.

1. Stripping is a chemical process using a compound called methylene chloride which activates the paint to bubble up and pull away from the surface to be removed with an abrasive tool like steel brush, steel wool or paint scraper.

2. Blasting through a pressure pot at a high psi(air pressure) and is next to help remove the excess paint left over from stripping and raise the metal surface to bond better to the new coating. There are few different kinds of media available which when combined with pressurized air become the ideal dry prep

3. Metal Prep Wash should be used especially when older metal or grimy parts are being done. There are (alkaline) salt remover solutions and acid-based solutions depending on the type of metal being powder coated. They help in removing extra fine debris and mil-scale rust or corrosion not seen by the naked eye.

4. Powder Coat & Curing is by where the metal is electrically charged to attract the powder particles then baked at temperatures not exceeding 500 degrees with specific time limits.  When the powder is cured it means that the powder has bonded together(flowed out) and fully harden when the metal cools

5. Inspection is the very last step to ensure that the finish is lacking cross-contamination and other surface issues like outgassing, peeling, and fish-eye which can be common issues in restoration. Be sure to go over your project with you powder coater at the time of pick up.

A final note: To help customers search for quality coatings there are powder coater member groups which custom coaters can be affiliated.  One of them is called the Powder Coating Institute (PCI). A hallmark of PCI is their Powder Coated Tough Mark. It is used by coaters and manufacturers to make consumers aware that their products are finished with this environmentally friendly process.

Can you powder coat over powder coat?

When powder coating over existing powder coat

Hands down, one of the most frequently asked questions in this business on how powder coating works.

Yes! Typically if the coating is newer and recently powder coated.  However, there are some variables that could play into whether you should coat over it or not.

Here are the top four things to consider when powder coating over powder coat.

Ask yourself

  1. Is the current coating sound and without flaws? If the coated metal project has imperfections i.e. bubbling from outgassing, fish-eyeing or spots where the coating has resisted, recoating may not be the first solution.
  2. Was it cured properly the first time?  If the original coating hasn’t cured properly the first time recoating will not be the solution this time.
  3. Is there existing rust or corrosion from exposure already?  As expected re-coating would not be the solution here because powder coating does not stop the process of decay.
  4. Is it a painted finish instead of being powder coated? Believe it or not,  many customers bring in projects they assume to be powder coated when in fact they are painted.  We find this especially in the outdoor furniture and fixture market because many of those products come from China and have the appearance of being powder coated when in fact they are not.

Determining these important features to your metal project is best left to the experts.

Something as easy as a color change or color match may not be so simple. It may, in fact, require a full restoration process.

The process of powder coating

September 25, 2017 by pcnearme

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.22″][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ z_index_tablet=”500″]

How powder coating works

The basic process of powder coating is straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide to powder coating and protecting metal.

1.Blast It – Sandblasting is the best way to prep a metal surface in need of restoration.  It removes dirt, grime, rust, corrosion.  It also removes existing painted or powder coated finishes.  All types of metal can be blasted such as alloys, aluminum, steel, iron, etc. Sometimes coaters will use a chemical strip process prior to abrasive blasting to keep the blast time down to a minimum.  If you have a new metal project you can sometimes by-pass this step.  Your powder coater will be able to make this determination.  The point of blasting is to remove any mil-scale rust and rough up the surface prior to coating.

2.Prep It – Prepping consists of applying a metal prep chemical solution to neutralize surface impurities, cleaning off any lingering debris and prevent rust and corrosion.  Depending on the type of metal there are several kinds of solutions your powder coater can use to enhance the surface before coating.  If this is a concern for you make sure to ask your powder coater about what they will be using;  this is a step that should not be missed.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”MPW Blog Form Mobile” _builder_version=”3.29.3″ global_module=”12659″ saved_tabs=”all”]

There are outdoor rated and interior only rated colors and powders.  Some powders require clear coats which could add to an increase in costs.  Here’s more on powder types with this post.  Be sure to ask your coater which is best for your project.

4.Cure It – The cure times for metal can range depending on how long it takes the oven to get to temp and the size of the oven. Typically degrees ranging from 250(low cure) to 400 are required for the powder to heat up enough to bond.  Once the right temp is achieved it takes 15-30 minutes for your metal part to achieve this state.  A coater’s oven should evenly displace the heat so that your part is heated throughout for the curing process to be done correctly.
