Maui Meets The Sun

In honor of total solar eclipse over Argentina and Chile on July 2, 2019, we thought we’d share our DKIST National Solar Observatory aperture project. Located on Haleakala which means House of the Sun in Hawaiian.

Although not very old, DKIST solar telescope aperture, part of the space telescope, was suffering from premature decay in the form of severe erosion to its exposed surface metals.

Tethering the Sun

Even the hero-god Maui, who lassoed the sun’s rays, would approve of what we accomplished in a matter of a couple of weeks.

That’s when observatory scientists reach out to us for help. They wanted to know if there was a coating tough enough to withstand the sun’s harsh rays. Because of its mixed metal fabrication containing brass, copper, and aluminum the thin aerospace paint which was applied before installation wasn’t holding up.

Needless to say, when it comes to saving the world rest assured these scientists did their homework when they chose Tiger Drylac Super Durable 061/80079 (Black Anodized Effect) It worked well and met their optical and absorption requirements(it gets hot around a giant piece of glass pointing at the sun)

The pieces were dissembled into three 15ft arched segments which were loaded into our blast facility. After abrasive blasting, each one had to be carefully handled and moved for each phase of the 5-stage restoration process. To meet the minimum finish requirements the DKIST Team needed we used Tiger’s Dryprotector Primer. Its superior adherence and moisture protection. It was key to the whole application process.

No joke when I asked about looking for asteroids to hit the earth anytime soon the lead scientist said, “…its the CMEs from the sun we have to worry about.” Yikes! TMI

This was an all hands on deck effort for all involved. A shout of appreciation goes to our rep Sandra Kresz at Tiger Drylac for all the hustle she put in to get us samples to us quickly for testing and answered any technical questions immediately.

iconic kaanapali restaurant gets an update

Leilani’s Restaurant, Kaanapali, Maui

In the spring of 2018, Leilani’s restaurant a favorite of both tourists and locals renovated their upstairs dining space with new surfaces, fixtures, and metalwork. The contractor, Honolulu Builders was poised to bring the vision together for the island to enjoy again. Now this new well-designed ohana style dining space captures a refreshed theme without losing its original welcoming appeal they are known for.

New railings are just the latest updates to this popular restaurant in Kaanapali. Located in picturesque West Maui. It’s a must-see!

The project included custom powder coated railings, enclosures, and handrails spanning up to 20 feet in length. Fabricated by local welders using substrates from aluminum to hard steel, The custom pieces included both curved, jogged and staggard for both functionality and a unique island look.

To keep a lasting beauty over time an AAMA 2604 compliant coating system was chosen. The two-coat application consisted of a primer zinc coating before the final color coat. Troubleshooting is the most overlooked aspect of powder coating

Going over what your getting is important as much as what to go over when working with a powder coater. The most overlooked aspect of powder coating is knowing the level of restoration you’re going to get for that perfect powder coat finish.

When going to your local coater be sure to ask how they go about restoring your project. Most quality custom coaters use a 5-stage restoration process to make sure your project gets done right. When you’re working on your prized or sentimental project it’s important to know that you’re getting it done right so be sure ask so you know what you’re getting into because restoration can be expensive and time-consuming.

1. Stripping is a chemical process using a compound called methylene chloride which activates the paint to bubble up and pull away from the surface to be removed with an abrasive tool like steel brush, steel wool or paint scraper.

2. Blasting through a pressure pot at a high psi(air pressure) and is next to help remove the excess paint left over from stripping and raise the metal surface to bond better to the new coating. There are few different kinds of media available which when combined with pressurized air become the ideal dry prep

3. Metal Prep Wash should be used especially when older metal or grimy parts are being done. There are (alkaline) salt remover solutions and acid-based solutions depending on the type of metal being powder coated. They help in removing extra fine debris and mil-scale rust or corrosion not seen by the naked eye.

4. Powder Coat & Curing is by where the metal is electrically charged to attract the powder particles then baked at temperatures not exceeding 500 degrees with specific time limits. When the powder is cured it means that the powder has bonded together(flowed out) and fully harden when the metal cools

5. Inspection is the very last step to ensure that the finish is lacking cross-contamination and other surface issues like outgassing, peeling, and fish-eye which can be common issues in restoration. Be sure to go over your project with you powder coater at the time of pick up.

A final note: To help customers search for quality coatings there are powder coater member groups which custom coaters can be affiliated. One of them is called the Powder Coating Institute (PCI). A hallmark of PCI is their Powder Coated Tough Mark. It is used by coaters and manufacturers to make consumers aware that their products are finished with this environmentally friendly process.

Ross Scott, the owner of Maui Powder Works and his new line of distressed powder coating called Powder Effects© . He credits his outcome on working 15 years in furniture refinishing before getting into the metal coating business.

“Our patina effect is perfect from day one,” says Scott. “You no longer have to wait for aging to occur.” Achieving a perfect architectural effect immediately without waiting for change over time is important to the resort and luxury home markets. These high-end markets demand ready-made finishes but seek the quality of being environmentally friendly, meaning they are safe for people to be around. This appeal is an added bonus when most patina effects are created today using layers of harsh chemicals to encourage the same effect to metal.

There’s one more bonus…cost. Copper is a very expensive metal to use. We can achieve a similar effect using gates and railings made out of cheaper substrates, like aluminum and steel. It’s a win-win for the manufacturing and contracting market.

The effect itself can be modified to the buyers’ specs. With this unique proprietary process, different effects can be created. Similar to what you find in nature, the effect can range from simple distressing to heavily distressed, aged looks. Maui Powder Works can use different colors to create different effects, the sky’s the limit.

Use these basic steps to care for your rims after they have been powder coated.

You’ve just picked up your parts from the powder coater and put your bike or car together for a sweet ride this weekend but forgot to ask this important question from your custom coater.

How do you maintain your powder coated metal?

There are several ways to protect your powder coated project especially from the elements over time.

First off, some info on the powders themselves. Powder coating powders come in all ratings and types like TGIC, polyurethanes, polyesters, and hybrids.

There are many colors and styles including smooth, textured, hammer-tone, metallic, translucent & illusion. Learn more on the different powder colors and their specific applications.

The care and maintenance of powder coating should be very little especially if it was done by quality custom coater.

However, if that leaves you feeling a little unsettled this list of safe cleaning products will make you feel better about the care and maintenance of your metal project.
