DKIST Solar Telescope Aperture
Haleakala, Maui

In honor of total solar eclipse over Argentina and Chile on July 2, 2019, we thought we’d share our DKIST National Solar Observatory aperture project. Located on Haleakala which means House of the Sun in Hawaiian.

Although not very old, DKIST solar telescope aperture, part of the space telescope, was suffering from premature decay in the form of severe erosion to its exposed surface metals.

Tethering the Sun

Even the hero-god Maui, who lassoed the sun’s rays, would approve of what we accomplished in a matter of a couple of weeks.

That’s when observatory scientists reach out to us for help. They wanted to know if there was a coating tough enough to withstand the sun’s harsh rays. Because of its mixed metal fabrication containing brass, copper, and aluminum the thin aerospace paint which was applied before installation wasn’t holding up.

Needless to say, when it comes to saving the world rest assured these scientists did their homework when they chose Tiger Drylac Super Durable 061/80079 (Black Anodized Effect) It worked well and met their optical and absorption requirements(it gets hot around a giant piece of glass pointing at the sun)

The pieces were dissembled into three 15ft arched segments which were loaded into our blast facility. After abrasive blasting, each one had to be carefully handled and moved for each phase of the 5-stage restoration process. To meet the minimum finish requirements the DKIST Team needed we used Tiger’s Dryprotector Primer. Its superior adherence and moisture protection. It was key to the whole application process.

No joke when I asked about looking for asteroids to hit the earth anytime soon the lead scientist said, “…its the CMEs from the sun we have to worry about.” Yikes! TMI

This was an all hands on deck effort for all involved. A shout of appreciation goes to our rep Sandra Kresz at Tiger Drylac for all the hustle she put in to get us samples to us quickly for testing and answered any technical questions immediately.

iconic kaanapali restaurant gets an update

Leilani’s Restaurant, Kaanapali, Maui

In the spring of 2018, Leilani’s restaurant a favorite of both tourists and locals renovated their upstairs dining space with new surfaces, fixtures, and metalwork. The contractor, Honolulu Builders was poised to bring the vision together for the island to enjoy again. Now this new well-designed ohana style dining space captures a refreshed theme without losing its original welcoming appeal they are known for.

New railings are just the latest updates to this popular restaurant in Kaanapali. Located in picturesque West Maui. It’s a must-see!

The project included custom powder coated railings, enclosures, and handrails spanning up to 20 feet in length. Fabricated by local welders using substrates from aluminum to hard steel, The custom pieces included both curved, jogged and staggard for both functionality and a unique island look.

To keep a lasting beauty over time an AAMA 2604 compliant coating system was chosen. The two-coat application consisted of a primer zinc coating before the final color coat. There are two approaches to powder coating spoked or laced rims on cars, motorcycles, and bikes.

One, leave them in place and powder coat over them.

Or two, remove and powder coat separately.

Making the best decision

If you’ve got dirt bike rims, spoke rims on bikes and motorcycles or cars that you’re looking to get powder coated, the question you need to ask is:

To take apart or… to not take apart?

Aside from the cost in additional labor using the second approach, powder coating them in place means that in the long term they cannot be taken apart. They will be entirely coated and non-removable.

That’s great for maintenance, however, if you’re wanting the full and complete restoration to spoked rims consider the longevity of the project at hand. You will need to how long are you keeping it or what level of restoration are you wanting to achieve with these spoked rims.

The cost calculator does not include any additional services. Rim repairs, welding, dismounting, tire replacement, taping and masking, two-tone(two color block), custom colors or special color, etc are usually all additional. Please check with your local coater about these additional services.

As a powder coater, we get asked a lot of questions about powder coating like -can you powder coat wheel with tires on? Nothing is too obscure or off limits. The more our followers know the better informed they are to make the best choices. In this post, we’ve summed up the top 5 burning questions you may have right now.

1. Can you powder coat the rubber part of a wheel? For the most part, high oven temperatures, exceeding 300+ degrees are the main reason why it’s not a good idea to powder coat tires or parts that have rubber and plastic left on them. Although there are low temp setting powders and ovens available for coating they are the exception, not the rule. That said you should check with your powder coater to see if they offer in-house services where they can remove or replace your tires and parts like stems while getting the rims restored. Many offer same day or quick turn around.

2. Can you clear coat over powder coat? You can apply a liquid acrylic, resin or lacquer based finish to any newly powder coated surface. Surface prep is minimal and it is best to not sand the finish prior but to go right over the existing finish as long as it is dust free. But did you know that powders also come in various clears and wet finishes? They are superior durability and extremely low maintenance. Consider that when you are deciding what to do.

3. Can you powder coat over paint? You can sometimes, but don’t expect great results. Just as heat makes powder flash and melds to metal the opposite effect can happen with common household liquid paints when exposed to high temps over 200 degrees. Sandblasting is the only solution to fully prepping a surface before powder coating because not only does it raise the surface to for good adherence but it completely removes the paint and debris that may liquify while curing in the oven.

4. How do I determine if it’s powder coated or painted? Powder coating is resistant to acetone. The easiest way to determine if the surface has been powder coated is to do a simple chemical stress test using acetone. First, find an area that is not highly visible. Then using a q-tip or cotton cloth wet the surface with acetone and gently rub the surface. If matter build-up appears on the applicator surface that is anything but grime then it is painted. You may also see distortion in the object’s surface finish as well where you tested. So be careful where you test! If it is powder coated it will not be affected

5. Paint vs Powder Coating. What’s the fundamental difference? The difference between paint and powder coating is not obvious at first. Powder paints are dry and bond to metal during the heating process called curing. Liquid paints cure too and are visibly viscous for ease of use on general porous and preferably flat surfaces but do not bond. What makes powder paints extremely ideal for metal is that by applying them through the electrolysis process the adherence and coverage ratios can be much higher than traditional painting. No drips + low surface imperfections = the perfect finish. However, the best advantage to powder coating is not what you see but what you don’t see. Durability over time! Powder coating withstands cracking, fading, peeling, chipping and is chemical resistant. It doesn’t need maintenance, regular upkeep or re-coating over time.
