What color rims will look good on your car? As a customer, it seems like a simple enough question to ask yourself as you pull up to your local powder coating shop. In this post, we dig deeper into what rim trends are happening right now across America, even as far west as Australia in wheel customizing.

We surveyed some of the top powder coaters to see what powder colors their customers were asking for. Almost all serviced clients both motorcycle and vehicle restoration. The bulk of respondents were early-stage coaters (under 5 years of experience)from the east coast, midlands, southwest, and the northwest/pacific.

50% said their customers definitely want to stand out and turn heads

36% said customers just want their rims to look good on the road again

14% said their customers would spend whatever it took to look the best, with no expense spared

Most requested custom wheel services

According to survey respondents, the types of services customers are requesting is expanding. Even though most said that the majority of customers are only wanting opaque, solid single stage colors in basic like blacks and whites.

Local knowledge proves best

Locally there were highly diverse responses. Some said going back to basics or factory looks. Others were seeing even more extreme customizing in their areas. If your thinking about getting your rims powder coated, consider a valuable opinion from your powder coater.

To avoid problems with your coater make sure they offer powder coating rims as part of their regular lineup of services offered to customers. Not all will tell you that. Some specialize in car only customizing, rim repair and refinishing.

Hidden Maui Resort Improves Its Curb Appeal Using Powder Coating

Tucked away on a windy road just minutes away from the big waves of Honolua Bay there is a resort that is preserving their uniqueness using powder coating. With direct cove access and fabulous snorkeling, Honokeana Cove Condos is using powder coating to restore and maintain some very special metal projects that help keep this vacation spot looking top-notch.

Preservation Project 1- Lighted Torches

Resident manager, Ray Watson, first came to us earlier this year after peak tourist season was winding down to work on their lighted Kahili torches project. The torch lighting stands out at night keeping drivers on alert of a dangerous bend in the road ahead. [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″]

What are Kahili?

The Kahili(s) were 30-40 years old, an inspiration reminiscent from the Kingdom of Hawaii. The stands needed stabilizing and the original painted finish had faded over time. The housing was dismantled carefully to see if it was a good candidate for the metal restoration process. It was amazing how well preserved it was.

We were impressed with the craftsmanship of the original builder. The metal was in impeccable shape for as old as it was. It made an excellent candidate for an AAMA 2604 compliant finish.

As a key feature to the main entrance, it was important for the oceanfront resort to do it right. Now the renovated light fixture keeps this place a visual stand out amongst similarly built vacation rentals just outside the main resort areas of Kaanapali in West Maui.

Restaurant Railing Project Aiea, Hawaii

Ah-hoy Diners!

Uncle’s Fish Market & Grill at Pearlridge takes you back to the simple life in Hawaii but that’s not what makes this restaurant famous. What does is their amazing selection of seafood caught daily to impress locals and visitors alike.

So when it came to updating the outside railing to accommodate patronage better, they sought the simplicity in a dynamic railing system from one of the top fabricators in the state. Stanford Yacht Tenders took its extensive background in marine and vessel builds to give a safe harbor feel to the land-based mall exterior.

Leaving the top rail a natural wood, the powder-coated railing project is traditional in design with a dark bronze two coat powder coating system by Maui Powder Works | Powder Coating Hawaii. Threaded steel completes the yacht-ie appeal.Additionally, beautifully crafted metal fish flank either side of the main entrance to entice the diner of what’s to be found inside! There are two approaches to powder coating spoked or laced rims on cars, motorcycles, and bikes.

One, leave them in place and powder coat over them.

Or two, remove and powder coat separately.

Making the best decision

If you’ve got dirt bike rims, spoke rims on bikes and motorcycles or cars that you’re looking to get powder coated, the question you need to ask is:

To take apart or… to not take apart?

Aside from the cost in additional labor using the second approach, powder coating them in place means that in the long term they cannot be taken apart. They will be entirely coated and non-removable.

That’s great for maintenance, however, if you’re wanting the full and complete restoration to spoked rims consider the longevity of the project at hand. You will need to how long are you keeping it or what level of restoration are you wanting to achieve with these spoked rims.
